VIZIO's High Definition Wireless Audio lineup

VIZIO is really stepping up their wireless audio product line. Readers of wirelessaudioblog will note that the VSB210WS a 2.1 soundbar from VIZIO has been on the market for over a year now, offering fairly punchy sound with the convenience of the a wireless subwoofer. The success of this audio solution has spawned a major line extension which appears closer to hitting stores over the next 6 to 10 weeks.

The linked press release (from CES) outlines the new line, which consists of three new soundbar systems:

  • The entry level 2.0 (model: VHT200)
  • The step-up 2.1 (model: VHT212) system with wireless subwoofer
  • The premium, 5.1 (model: VHT512) with wireless subwoofer and wireless satellites

From the press release:

All of the 2.1 and 5.1 home theater sound bars and wireless headphones include support for High Definition Wireless Audio (HDWA) which lets users enjoy their home theater audio from anywhere in the home.

These wireless soundbar systems are compatible with a HDWA-compatible iPod dock that can be placed anywhere around the house, and a set of HDWA-enabled headphones (VHP100) with active noise cancellation.

It all might line sounds a little overwhelming, but once the info goes live on the website I am sure things will make more sense. I got a chance to play with the products last week, and their freaking cool.

Personally, I'm stoked about these because Avnera's amps and wireless chips are riddled throughout, and good folks have been busting their behinds making them happen.

Some background info on the iHome Studio Series iP1

As soon as you get your hand on an iP1, the first thing you will probably do is crank it up and express surprise at how good the thing sounds – and then you'll realize that what you paid for it now seems like a bargain.  The next thing you probably won't do is crack it open to see what's inside.

At Avnera, almost 2 years ago now, we were sitting around thinking of what kind of splash to make with our SpeakerMagic product line.  You see, we were discovering all kinds of goodness that our designers packed inside the amplifier circuits... this chip could go to eleven!  Rock on.  So as test board after test board spilled out of the lab incrementally proving the ever-increasing power capabilities of the digital stereo input, 4 channel Class-D output amplifier, us marketing dudes got pretty excited.  The first SpeakerMagic IC was geared to enable iPod speakerdocks that delivered true HiFi sound quality.  Realizing its potential was a goal set for CES in Jan 2008.  Code-named Hendrix, I spec'd and commissioned the world's first 100W iPod speakerdock.  Dressed in gaudy eye-catching form factor, with yellow drivers, and Madonna-like teets-née-bass-ports at the rear, this thing was meant to attract a stare... and then deliver on its visual promise with serious audio punch.  That it did.  In fact, it pushed the 130W barrier.  SpeakerMagic was inside accepting digital stereo input, adding voicing and spatial sweetness with an integrated floating-point DSP, as well as sub-dividing the stereo signal with active crossovers into a 2+2 stereo signal, to pass on 4 channels of soon to be bi-amplified stereo output via Avnera's patented class-D technology.  We delivered near 96 dB SNR (i.e. better than the iPod itself), and 0.006% THD+N.  Hendrix was pretty kick-ass. Our acoustics design partner also did a good job designing a rock solid cabinet and able drivers for the tweeters and woofers.  Hendrix was a pioneer in the dock world.  In addition to sounding good, it also had to be iPhone ready, so very robust against GSM noise... check.  And it had to be affordable, i.e. cheaper than a Bose Soundock at retail... check, again.

Like all good reference designs, they are about as profitable as the toilet in the back office, unless they find their hosted electronics a horse to get them to market for consumers to enjoy.

Enter iHome.  At CES, they heard, they loved it, their designers took the reigns and crafted a gorgeous if not somewhat polarizing industrial design.  Talk about "by-design."  The iP1 is attractive, eye-catching, classy, polarizing, minimalist, elegant... by-design.  For iHome it was a new thing designing a system for the power-levels they chose to go to market with... 100Watts!  Awesome.  No product marketing numbing-dumbing here.  The heart and soul of Hendrix is alive and well in the iP1.  In fact the only difference is Hendrix's 5" drivers were downsized to 4", but they stepped up the throw, the robustness, and general quality of the drivers to compensate.  This was a very practical consideration to make the product fit on retailers' shelves.  You will see the dock soon at two very major retailers, and it will be clear that size does matter in these spaces.  Thankfully it was handled judiciously, and in all honesty, fixed a requirements miss-step we should have considered when Hendrix was conceived at Avnera.

iHome leveraged the floating point DSP inside the SpeakerMagic IC, and ported Bongiovi's dynamic, real-time "Digital Power Station" equalization algorithm to create a uniquely qualified piece.  Bongiovi DPS (as some reporting would mislead you to think) is not a simple loudness curve... it is content specific, real-time adaptive, and focused on boosting frequency response across the musical composition to better match an "out-of-the-studio" mastering profile.  What happens to music in the digitization, distribution, and compression regimes is horribly destructive to tunes recorded in analog studios, or digital stuff that's post-processed to hell by less than able sound engineers.  Bongiovi's patented algorithms seek to recover the mixing desk mastered quality... and you will particularly notice the benefits when you listen to classic material like Miles Davis, or Led Zeppelin, or yes... even Hendrix.  It also happens to sound great on modern dance tracks and folk-infused pop music.  So young and old music tastes will have some joy from pressing the B button.  In all frankness, some tracks do sound perfect without Bongiovi turned on... so it will end up a matter of listening tastes and some learning about what sounds good to you and when.  But on or off, the iP1 rocks 100 Watts of clean digital audio.

It also shows what iHome does really well.  They really understand the iPhone and iPod user, and they provide them solutions that make the iPhone/iPod more useful and enjoyable when you aren't sporting the earphones – from the bedroom, to the listening room, to the hotel room.

The iHome Studio Series iP1 also happens to make sure the ad hoc, post-night-out after-parties and dorm-room pre-parties are well-amped.  So for the first time with authority, iHome gives your iPod music collection the punch it's been waiting for... rock-on.

iHOME|ONE minisite revealed... say Watt?

Now, one-hundred of you... all together....  Watt!

ihomeone

iHome has pulled the curtain back just a bit to tease the forthcoming iHome ONE.  They state this is "the one you've been waiting for."  If only everyone knew on how many levels that's not an overstatement! This one is near and dear to my heart.

I was pumped to hear the early sample at CES back in January, and it was clear even in its prototype state, this thing has the potential to be a game-changer for the category and for the iHome brand.  The iHome ONE completely shatters your expectations of what iHome is capable of delivering, and delivers a nice marketing vehicle for Bongiovi DPS who are making a splash of their own this year.  At CES, with Tony Bongiovi mastering the ceremonies, iHome blew mind after mind of those who stopped by to see what iHome had up their sleeves for this year.

Aside from their normal clever fair – which will continue to deliver pleasant industrial design, iPod/iPhone compatibility, reliability, and value – iHome has stepped up their game for people who need power, clarity, and elegance.

Oh yeah, this this does a bi-amplified stereo configuration @ 100 Watts total rms power.  Did I mention that?

Vizio Soundbar (VSB210WS) available now... goodness within

150sq_vizioThe Vizio Soundbar (VSB210WS) is finally available!

Go get it now!  See Walmart and Sears.  Or check out more info at Vizio's homepage.

Warning.  What you are about to read is a biased, but pretty informed review.  I encourage you to check out reviews from other parts of the internet, and I will also link as many as I find here at wirelessaudioblog... so over the coming months, check out the rest of this site for more recent infos...

OK...

Pros: Wireless subwoofer, Avnera wireless, Avnera class-D, support for (forthcoming) wireless headphones

Cons: At $349, be ready to spend over a $1000 because you're gonna want a few for your house.  You will wake your neighbors.

The VSB210WS uses two of Avnera's core technologies.

The first technology is the wireless system that is employed in devices like the Logitech Clearchat PC Wireless, the Rocketfish RF-WS01 and RF-WS02, the Rocketfish RF-WHTIB, and countless others.  The Vizio Soundbar uses Avnera's wireless system for a high-performance, wireless subwoofer. There is also future-ready support for wireless headphones (with SRS action as well).  This is a killer feature that you won't see on any other soundbar on the market...the wireless system will drive up to three wireless headphones simultaneously, and when activating the headphones, automatically mutes the speakers.

The second of Avnera's technology put to work is their Class-D amplifier solution.  Avnera's Class-D is finally ready for showtime and it's gaining traction in the industry due to its affordability, high power-efficiency, and extremely low distortion performance.  In fact, Avnera's Class-D is patented and pretty much bad-ass.  The fundamental advantage is the patented PWM driver stage that delivers very high PSRR (power supply rejection ratio) performance.. thus allowing Avnera-based powered speakers to run on lower-grade, switching power supplies, without encountering increases in distortion or noise at the audio output due to power supply noise.  It also has a scalable power output stage that enables it to serve low power, low-cost device as well as higher-power premium offerings... all the while maintaining hi-fi quality and affordability.   As a result, Avnera's amp is finding duty in a broad range of affordable consumer devices, like the Rocketfish RF-WS02 and entry-level products like the iHome iP27, and premium products like Vizio's offering and iHome's iP1 which is due to hit later this season.  In the Vizio Soundbar, the amplifier drives both the bar AND the subwoofer.  You really just gotta hook this bad boy up and hear the difference.

Also enjoy the implementations of SRS TruSurround HD and SRS TruVolume running on a dedicated Cirrus DSP (I think... need to dig back thru FCC teardowns to verify).

Great user review of the RF-WS02 outdoor wireless speaker

Rocketfish RF-WS02
This www.bestbuy.com user (SR24) "gets" it.  In fact, she got almost every major differentiated feature that sets this product apart from others...  personally, I LOVE the fact she likes the group volume feature.

We bought two of these speakers to use in our living room and not outdoors. We only used one of the senders, but it works both speakers. We just had to hold down the connection button on the sender and the speaker at the same time so they can find each other just like with a bluetooth device. The cool thing is that when you have two speakers connected, if you select the stero setting, then you can control the volume for BOTH speakers from one or the Speaker Volume Knobs. If you want to control the sound independently, you change it to the mono setting. We LOVE having these speakers right beside us in the living room, because we can turn the volume down so low that you can watch TV while others in the house can't hear the audio at all. If I am home alone I keep it on stero so I can control both speakers. But when my husband is home, we turn it on mono and each person can control their speaker. Sounds great both ways.

The sound is crystal clear and I love being able to understand conversations in movies that otherwise seemed muffled. There is also a bass button that can be pushed if you want more bass."
